A completed San Francisco residential building is sited across the street from the historic Black Hawk jazz club, where Miles Davis often played. My design was chosen in an architectural competition, incorporating an algorithmic translation of Davis’ trumpet solo in “So What” across the 16 architectural “measures.” The resulting pattern becomes a playful and dynamic representation of the song, creating a connection back to the Black Hawk, once the epicenter of culture in the Tenderloin.
Components of my competition submission, including Miles Davis concept ties, algorithm structure, and facade elevation.
“The judges were really blown away by the sophistication and the meaningfulness of what Sofia is proposing to create here. It’ll be a hidden code that’s such a reward for the community and references an integral part of the Tenderloin’s history.”
